Digestion: A Basic Function of Our Body
Digestion! Actually, it... "digestive" It would be more accurate to separate them like that. Because the issue is much more than just a single word...
Digestion, the process by which our bodies convert the nutrients we take in into energy and building blocks, is a highly complex and vital process. This process begins in the mouth, continues through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, and ends at the anus. Food reaches the colon within an average of 8 hours from the moment it enters the mouth, and in a healthy digestive system, it takes approximately 36 hours to be completely eliminated from the body. If your bowel movements are regular and stool consistency is normal, 36 hours is an ideal time for digestion. Slow digestion can lead to constipation, while fast digestion can cause diarrhea.
What happens when digestion breaks down?
Having a healthy digestive system greatly improves quality of life, while digestive problems can make life difficult. The most common digestive disorders include:
- Bloating and gas
- Indigestion
- Stomach ache
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
So, what are the ways to keep digestion healthy?
What should be done for good digestion?
- Consume Natural and Unprocessed Foods: Processed and ready-made foods strain the digestive system. We realize how harmful these foods are when we experience digestive problems.
- Avoid Chemicals and Pesticides: With the increase in population, rapid and intensive agricultural production has increased the use of chemicals. Even if we try to eat naturally, the decline in soil quality means we may have to take some vitamins and minerals as supplements.
- Wash Your Food Properly: A common mistake is to put fruits and vegetables directly into vinegar water when washing them. Soaking them first in baking soda water, then in vinegar water, is the most effective way to reduce pesticide residue. You can then soak them in vinegar water to prevent insect infestation.
- Choose the Right Diet: Experts consider the Mediterranean diet to be the healthiest. Known for including a variety of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and whole grains, the Mediterranean diet supports the digestive system in the long term.
- Prioritize Microbiota Diversity: The balance of beneficial bacteria in our gut is critical for healthy digestion. You can maximize the benefits of different nutrients by consuming colorful vegetables and fruits. Foods containing prebiotic and probiotic bacteria, such as yogurt and kefir, can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria if not produced correctly; therefore, they must be produced very carefully and in sterile environments.
- Prioritize Gut Health: Our gut is essentially the center of our body. In fact, the formula for happiness is healthy gut health! A malfunctioning digestive system can negatively impact many areas, from the immune system to mood.
Digestion Process and Meal Intervals
Our intestines... It regenerates every 4 days . This is the time it takes for something harmful to be completely eliminated from the body after consumption. In a normal digestive process, food passes from the stomach to the large intestine in about 8 hours, while it takes 36 hours to be eliminated from the body. If your bowel movements are regular and stool consistency is normal, 36 hours is an ideal time for digestion.
Meal intervals also directly affect digestion. Because blood sugar levels rise with each meal, experts recommend a break of at least 5 hours, and preferably 8 hours, between meals. This gives the body a chance to rest instead of constantly dealing with digestion.
Natural Aids for Digestion
- Peppermint tea is recommended for those experiencing bowel problems, especially those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It soothes digestion after meals.
- Ginger tea soothes the stomach and aids digestion. However, it may have a mild blood-thinning effect, so it should always be consumed in moderation.
- Prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber-rich foods improve digestion by strengthening the gut microbiota.
The importance of digestive health is often not fully appreciated until digestive problems begin to appear. Even with digestive problems, we tend to assume everything is fine because our intestines and other digestive organs tolerate the situation with their perfectly functioning system. Therefore, the earlier we establish healthy eating habits, the easier it will be for us in later years. I, too, recently... As someone who has been experiencing digestive problems for three years I've done a lot of research on this topic. My aim is to share what I've read and learned with you, raising awareness about the importance of a healthy digestive system.
